Follow the guidance of John Butler and his friend Lewis Clark as they teach your students the importance of identifying the main idea and supporting details of a non-fiction paragraph. Students will be taught to look at the beginning and end of paragraphs, as well as finding a topic and asking themselves "what is the author trying to tell me about the topic?", to decipher the main idea. Students will then explore supporting details, and how they support the main idea. They'll be given examples to find the detail that supports the main idea, as well as finding supporting details that do not belong. There is so much for students to learn, that this presentation can be broken up into several weeks of instruction. As always...this presentation is thematically based, and fully animated to ensure students will be engaged in the learning process.
