This is an integrated language arts and social studies activity that I have designed and tested with both third and first graders. It was perfect for both and would work for all students between Kindergarten and Fifth Grade because it can easily be modified. You can instruct the students to simply illustrate each page in the step book as you guide them through it or you could have more advanced learners research and write about the location on each page.
I based this project on Joan Sweeney's book, Me on the Map. It would be beneficial to read the book with the project, but it is not necessary. Each student will design a layered step book to represent their place on the map. You may then have them create an art project of themselves on the earth to match the cover of the book. It makes a great display.
Also included are...
2 writing prompt pages: Each begins with, "If I could travel anywhere on the map I would go to..." There is a primary ruled option and an intermediate ruled option. Both have a space to illustrate their writing.
a page to create a map of their room
a page to create a map of the classroom
PLEASE NOTE: I RECENTLY ADDED A FREE SUPPLEMENT FOR CANADIAN BUYERS THAT INCLUDES PROVINCE...you can download it here.
